I was browsing through the archives of Dan Myer’s great Dy/Dan site and was reminded of a fantastic video I ran across several months ago.
Created by Stefan Nadelman of Portland Oregon, Food Fight
is an abridged history of American-centric war, from World War II to present day, told through the foods of the countries in conflict. Watch as traditional comestibles slug it out for world domination in this chronologically re-enacted smorgasbord of aggression.
Very clever! I’m not sure I can think of a better way to introduce a 20th century history unit. Kids can try and guess events and predict participants. Nadelman breaks down who’s who and provides a cheat sheet when you get stuck.
And you will! Some, such as the hamburger, are pretty easy to figure out. Others, such as the item that turns out to be kimchee, not so much.
