There are a wide range of professional groups that focus on the Social Studies. The list below is fairly comprehensive but is ever-changing.
 

National Council for the Social Studies
The largest association in the country devoted solely to social studies education, NCSS engages and supports educators in strengthening and advocating social studies

National Council on Economic Education
A nationwide network that leads in promoting economic literacy with students and their teachers. NCEE's mission is to help students develop the real-life skills they need to succeed
Kansas Council for the Social Studies
This newly recreated site provides resources and info for SS teachers in Kansas / the state version of the NCSS
National Council for History Education
Dedicated to promoting the importance of history in schools and in society
George Lucas Foundation
A nonprofit operating foundation that documents and disseminates information about exemplary programs in K-12 schools to help these practices spread nationwide. Great resources including Edutopia online magazine!

 

Association of American Geographers
Advances professional studies in geography and encourages the application of geographic research in education, government, and business
American Association for State and Local History
Provides leadership service, and support for its members, who preserve and interpret state and local history in order to make the past more meaningful in American society
American Geographical Society
An organization of professional geographers and other devotees of geography who share a fascination with the subject and a recognition of its importance
American Historical Association
The largest historical society in the US, a nonprofit membership organization founded for the promotion of historical studies, the collection and preservation of historical documents and artifacts, and the dissemination of historical research
American Association for History and Computing
Dedicated to the reasonable and productive marriage of history and computer technology
American Political Science Association
The leading professional organization for the study of political science and serves more than 14,000 members in over 70 countries
American Social History Project
Aims to revitalize interest in history by challenging the ways that people learn about the past

Center for Civic Education
A nonprofit, nonpartisan educational corporation dedicated to fostering the development of informed, responsible participation in civic life by citizens committed to values and principles fundamental to American constitutional democracy
Center for History and New Media
Uses digital media and computer technology to change the ways that people--scholars, students, and the general public--learn about and use the past
Center for Teaching International Relations
A leader in international education, their programs and publications promote a better understanding of the world in which we live
Foundation for Teaching Economics

Oral History Association
